Family photography in Cedar Rapids, IAWhat is a typical session like?
A regular session usually lasts about an hour. With young children, I always offer breaks, snacks, “bribes” to help keep them happy. Things are not overly scripted. I like kids being kids. Although it is important to find a time of the day that your child is the happiest, please keep in mind that the best time of day for shooting outdoors is generally the morning before the sun gets too high or a couple of hours before sunset. This is when the light is most favorable, and when the temperature is most bearable in the summer.

Engagement sessions also take about an hour. Feel free to have a couple different outfit changes. I always like engagement photos to be fun and different. I love shooting at places that mean a lot to the couple. Also, be creative with your clothes. This is the time to let your personalities show!

Extended family sessions will take about an hour and a half. I will shoot some of the whole group, some of each individual family & other combinations you’d like. Again, if with small children, we allow for some breaks with snacks and play time.

Newborn sessions typically take two or more hours, depending on the newborn. I allow time for babies to be cuddled (my favorite part), for them to be fed and changed. Every baby is different. You can find more information on preparing for a newborn session here.

Before our session, we will consult with you to plan your session. Be sure to bring all of your creative ideas to the table! We love to have fun, to use whimsical objects, and go to unusual places, so we look forward to planning a totally unique and custom portrait session for you!

What should I wear?
For family sessions, I recommend that you coordinate your clothing, but that you do not match. Be creative and layer to allow for more depth. Gone are the days where everyone wears khaki and white or all black. Those colors are fine, but be sure to add accent colors. (If you are planning on getting wall art, make sure the colors don’t clash with your décor)

For children, I recommend layers. Adding a tie, jacket, headband, striped tights, rain boots, etc. can really add to a look. In addition to typical children’s stores check out etsy for the most unique clothing and accessories. It’s best to avoid anything too uncomfortable. While I LOVE ties on littleboys, i feel it looks most natural with shirts untucked and with jeans for a more natural look.

For girls, i love skirts, but keep in mind if it’s too short, it will limit posing. It’s always best to layer with tights if it’s too short. Also, PLEASE avoid anything that has a big logo on the front. Unless it’s an ad for
a company, we don’t want to see the company logo on your child’s shirt.
